OLD DERBY CINEMAS

Between 1910 and 1938 around 19 cinemas opened up in various locations throughout Derby. The majority of them showed their final film in the late 1950s early 1960s. I was an avid film goer in the 1940/50s I visited all these cinemas except The Sitwell, The Popular, The Rex and The Temperance Hall.


The Temperance Hall Curzon St the first venue to screen regular films in Derby as early as 1904 with screenings on Saturday nights.


The Victoria Electric Theatre 1910 the first purpose built cinema, in Becketwell Lane later to be The Empire then The Black Prince it was the first Derby cinema to show a widescreen cinemascope film, The Robe, closed 1960.


The Regal/ABC in East Street opened June 27th 1938 closed July 14th 1984.


The Gaumont on London Rd near the Spot opened Sept 17th 1934 closed May 5th 1983.


The Coliseum, stood at the corner of London Road and Traffic Street opened April 4th 1934 closed Aug 12th 1961.


The Odeon in St Peter’s Street was previously the Whitehall Theatre opened Dec 14th 1914 closed May 1st 1965.


The Midland Electric Theatre/Picture House/Ritz in Babington Lane opened July 27th 1910 closed Aug 27th 1960


The Hippodrome in Green Lane was both a theatre and a cinema opened Sept 15th 1930 closed Oct 28th 1950.


The Alexandra known as the Alex, on Normanton Road opened Oct 6th 1913 closed May 31st 1953.Reopened as The Trocadero dance hall.


The Broadway at Allenton, Sat mornings with Roy Rogers and Gene Autry etc. opened Dec 17th 1928 closed Sept 24th 1960.


The Cavendish on the island at the junction of Stenson Rd, Walbrook Rd. Derby Lane opened Dec 28th 1937 closed Dec 19th 1960. I went to the Sat matinees in the late 1940s.


The Rex at Alvaston on the corner of London Road and Commerce Street, the first cinema in Derby to show Bollywood films opened March 2nd 1925 closed Oct 22nd 1966.


The Normanton Picture Palace Dairy House Road opened on March 24th 1913 closed July 11th 1959.

The Cosy later the Forum/Cameo along London Road screened lots of X rated films opened Dec 18th 1913 closed Sept 26th 1959.


The Popular in Mill Street opened Aug 16th 1928 closed March 15th 1958 became the nightclub The Talk of the Midlands.


The Cosmo on Upper Boundary Road First opened Dec 10th 1925 closed May 23rd 1959.


The Gloria on Nottingham Rd Chaddesden later the Essoldo opened Nov 21st 1938 closed Dec 31st 1982.


The Majestic Wiltshire Road Chaddesden opened April 14th 1938 closed April 28th 1962.

The Sitwell at Spondon opened Aug 20th 1928 closed Oct 11th 1958
